Chapter Thirteen

We left Duff in Night’s care because I wanted to check in with my sisters. Cale went to get coffee and treats while I gathered everyone up to talk.

Petal was stationed at the desk and checking the calendar for openings when I walked through the door. She spoke into her headset in a pleasant tone, and I could tell she was helping a client. I waved as I passed and wondered how she managed to always look so uber-feminine and harmless.

Okay. What I was most curious about was where Petal stashed the Troll ornament she’d made. I wanted to make sure she hadn’t gotten rid of it. The Sprite’s many talents brought a smile to my face. Soon her parents would have to pay proper attention to their daughter.

Meeting soon, I mouthed to Petal as I passed and pointed down the hall toward the conference room. A big smile and a thumbs up let me know she understood.

What Duff told me about Sprites and their fighting skills made me see Petal’s actions differently. From almost the moment we met, I saw the Sprite as my equal. And not just because of her clever use of her power. Petal used her power to do good for anyone she felt deserved her help. Understanding made even more grateful she’d thought I was worth fighting for.

My sisters and I were already in the conference room when Cale arrived with treats. He set down his purchases and got subjected to a duplicate of the hugs I’d received moments before. Once again, Petal had taken it on herself to inform my sisters of what Cale and I had been doing.

Cale extracted two coffees from his purchases and turned the rest over to my sisters to sort out. He brought one to me and handed it over with a cheek kiss that I didn’t bother to dodge. Did I have a moment where I wondered what message it was sending to the Muses? Of course, I did, but after him keeping the ghosts of my captivity away from me last night, he’d earned my tolerance.

Cale carried the other coffee to Petal. Instead of setting it down on the table, he knelt with it in his hand. He spoke softly and smiled at her, which elicited a girly giggle from the Sprite. Petal patted his face, which had Cale giving her his biggest smile yet, before standing again.

Okay, I admit it. The green-eyed monster rose inside me when Petal sipped her coffee and smiled up at Cale. In my head, I pulled my imaginary sword and cut the green-eyed monster’s head off. I refused to be jealous of a woman who’d helped rescue me.

Since it had been my cheek Cale had kissed, I straightened my big girl panties and sipped my coffee without showing an ounce of jealous irritation. Patting myself on the back for acting my age, I smiled at the two Muses I’d specifically come to see.

“Polly, how’s the poem going.”

“Good. I don’t have a completion date yet, but I’ve got the basics done.
